Good bacteria, also known as probiotics, are necessary for our survival. These are the bacteria that protect us from toxins, stabilize our digestive processes and assist in a healthy immune system. Unfortunately, those of us who drink coffee, use birth control pills, take antibiotics, eat foods with preservatives, drink carbonated sodas, or are under stress can unwillingly kill the good bacteria with the bad, thereby causing our health to worsen.
Colon health depends upon the good bacteria to flourish. These good bacteria produce enzymes which in turn deliver nutrients throughout the body. So – even if you are eating healthy, an imbalance in your good to bad bacteria, you may not be receiving the full nutrition from those foods.
In addition, these good bacteria battle against the bad bacteria and remove toxins from within the colon. Acidophilus and bifidobacteriumis are good supplements for the colon as well as the entire intestinal tract. In addition to guarding our intestines, these supplements are also known to fight yeast infections and some researchers have proposed that these good bacteria may help fend off cancer.
In may be surprising to know that over 400 types of bacteria in our intestinal tract, with more than a billion bacteria molecules. What we have to understand is that most of these bacteria may be beneficial to us. We want to ensure that any time we do something that changes the balance of good to bad bacteria, such as taking antibiotics, we work to restore the balance within our colon.
